OBS Studio

OBS Studio (Open Broadcast Software) is a free and open source (FOSS) forware for recording and live streaming video. The software allows you create videos which incorporate webcams, window captures, browser windows, images and text to create layered scenes. It also incorporates an audio mixer and allows you to switch between multiple different scenes to create professional broadcasts. OBS has cross-platform support for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Personal Experience

In the past I've mainly used OBS for screen recording rather than streaming. In particular I found it useful for recording videos of VR which could be difficult with other software. At the same time OBS can also be used for green screen chroma key or as a virtual camera which allows sources and scenes in OBS to be used as a new video source in another software such as Zoom or MS Teams which don't have inbuilt OBS integrations.

Tools & Software Integrations

Live streamers can broadcast directly from OBS to a large number of platforms including YouTube, Twitch, Twitter and Facebook Live.
